The Inferno — “the Pit” in short formulas, “CDI” in some late transcription archives — is a single cosmological domain with two successive modes: the Ante-Inferno, a threshold before the Acheron, and the full descent through seven circles. Its portal opens from the first level of the Temple and Place of the Just.

Nature

  • Ante-Inferno (threshold): a field before the Acheron where souls that have lost hope move under the guidance of Swedenborg and her Lamp of Hope. It is preliminary admission, not condemnation: some souls ascend back, others descend to the first circle once the Acheron is crossed.
  • Full descent: seven descending steps, “the Pit” or “the Descent”. The descendant’s body changes its mode of being in each circle; the soul recognizes landscapes it never saw yet always inhabited.

The Pit is “the region of the greater universe where what the soul did not resolve above is lived again below, in echo, with the possibility of resolving or deepening it.” It is a place of return (souls come back when the cosmology calls them), of echo (resonance, not literal repetition) and of possibility (ascent is geographically possible, though doctrinally difficult).

The threshold

Unlike the Dantean Ignavi, who never chose, the souls here lost hope during transit. Loss of hope is neither instant despair (which leads straight to the first circle) nor ordinary doubt, but a sustained ontological shift: the soul stops hoping actively without yet consummating denial. Its duration is measured by how dry the inner work of hoping has become.

Swedenborg, a faceless guide and the hidden identity of Talia Cristalia, works mainly here; her Lamp is the threshold’s signature. Whoever follows her may return; whoever loses sight of her descends to the Acheron, where Charon ferries souls to the first circle.

The portal bears the verses of Dante’s Inferno III, ending “Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch’intrate” (“Abandon all hope, ye who enter”). Whoever crosses has lost hope or loses it in crossing; souls restored by the guide cross outward and regain it.

Lost Ones

The Lost Ones know one another in the Ante-Inferno before descending:

  • Swedenborg: the guide, the hand that holds the light while others walk.
  • Ärsvan the condemned: Templar who touched the sphere for Ariadna and was obliterated beneath the Cathedral of Paris; reappears praying in the desecrated chapel of Castle of Siegling.
  • Sven: barbarian with a bloody axe, condemned for taking the blood of Seth and executed by his group.
  • Helter: six-fingered demon who bore chains of the Second Circle.
  • Bertrand: cursed hunter with a lantern of Divine Flame, stripped of the sacred signature; linked to Sheridron, the lineage of Maristo and the destruction of Notre-Dame.
  • The harlequin avatar: paladin-harlequin, a moment of the Arian → Auro line’s descent, not an independent character (see The Arian Line).
  • Maristo the Condemned: condemned paladin, infernal facet of the Aide-de-camp.
  • The Puritan of the second circle: unnamed; associated with waiting by a fire that is not there, crutches and redemption.

The Choir of the Descent

The fullest descriptions of the Pit come from a confessional choral voice, the Choir of the Descent: a mode of utterance, not a faction. Whoever sings the Pit has descended into it. It quotes Dante as primary source and treats piety as an ontological mechanism, not a sentimental virtue.
