Purgatory is a cosmological region in its own right, distinct from the Inferno traversed circle by circle in the Descent; it was there, in a cycle before the Descent, that Auro was found — or abandoned.

Description
Travelers name it as a stop actually set foot on: “When we reached purgatory…”, said in passing, like a remembered port. It may be one of the stations of Auro’s wanderings across planes after the fall of his companions.
