Paladin in Hell is one of the founding arcs of the shared cosmos: a paladin’s incursion into Hell, set within the Mediterraneum axis. From it emerged Maristo and Arian together, pacts with Graz’zt, the fate of Maristo’s master, and the first form of the Vala Cristalis.

Klyssandral and the dragged temple

Maristo’s master, Klyssandral, is the pivot of the arc: a whole temple had been dragged to the fifth level of the empire — the fifth level of Hell, in the archive’s reading. This is the central wound of the arc. Maristo, his disciple, emerged with Arian at his side; together they carry the debt to the master and the rank of those who have crossed infernal levels and returned.

Pacts with Graz’zt

The arc includes pacts with Graz’zt, made while he was still at full strength, before his diminution by Maleika. They are among the long threads Maristo carries into his later appearances in Uchronia, and they leave Arian in an ambiguous position before the infernal powers.

The Valis Cristal

At the heart of the arc is the Valis Cristal, a local treasure later reworked into the Vala Cristalis: the layer of cosmological crystallization that sustains the gem-world of that name, protects Lucifer in Buckingham, and is again disputed in the Sancta Sanctorum of the Inferno.

Later appearances

  • The Inferno gesta (campaign-cycle), in the episode of the Sancta Sanctorum — seat of the Tabernacle and the Ark of the Covenant in Hell — where all fight all for the Vala Cristalis.
  • The Masters × World of Kryle crossovers.
