Description
A sign reads PANFAGONIA — PERIFERIA DE LA GULA. Beneath it lies a caravan without caravaneers, burst fruit on the table, overturned jugs, bronze platters abandoned in the mud, and a citadel burning in chestnut colors in the distance, uninhabited yet lit. A lone hooded figure walks through the marsh, whose posture suits the saint the Archive calls Patience.
It is attached to Hell as garages are attached to big houses. It is not yet Hell proper, but not outside it either. It borders Crapulia on one shore and the Third Circle on the other; at the far end the smoke of central Hell marks the direction.
Nature
There is no hunger in Panfagonia, only leftovers. The gluttony punished here is the kind that learned to eat without company, that finished dinner when nobody was left at the table. The rain is soup, the puddles cold broth, and the flies do not buzz because they already know the order of things.
Pan and fagia names abound in manuals of infernal orientation; a gloss attributed to Paulus of Alexandria calls this one among the most exact: not everything is eaten, everything has already been eaten.
Patience’s passage
Patience crossed Panfagonia in her solitary descent, the only recorded visitor. Each step raised flies and each next step returned them.
Open questions
- What Patience saw in Panfagonia she did not tell the group on her return; whether it was left for another life or another tongue is unknown.
