The Pyrexians are a cult of five that operates in the crypts beneath Paris and coordinates the bombings aimed at the city.

Description

Five cultists, each with a bronze brazier, stand around a glyph traced on the floor; green smoke rises from the center to the vaulted ceiling. The crypts link churches, pantheons and catacombs. Their writing, Pyrexian script,, a magigraphy of their own, is invoked, not translated; reading it burns the eyes.

Role

The cult lays out the network rather than planting bombs: five points, five braziers, five red crosses on the 1898 map of Paris in the Pyrexian Handouts. Its agents were the Time Bandits of Ärsvan (later obliterated by the sphere) in the first attempt, and the witches of Macbeth, who tempted Sven, in the second, in the Catacombs. The real target was Notre-Dame. Documented crossings: the Grand Inquisitor of Paris and Steam Torture.

The Archive ties the Pyrexian invasion to the crossing of Convergences with the World of Kryle (Paladin in Hell): through the portal of that world of holiness came its reverse, the biomechanical Pyrexian tide. They echo in the Descent, where echo-agents in the Inferno’s first level coordinate the second attempt.
