Thel is the daughter of Arian, mother of Helter and Ariel, the veiled guide “Tel” of the Descent, and the same entity as the Lady of Pain who rules Sigil; she was killed by her son Helter.
Origin
Her father Arian is the 25th sun, the leshay. Her name comes from William Blake’s The Book of Thel (1789), whose virgin refuses bodily birth.
In an old account, a girl raised in pain by Loviatar, kidnapped and broken, offered the erasure of all she had lived, answered «no, quiero recordar todo» (“no, I want to remember everything”). This was her formation as a “little lady of pain” under the goddess whose signature is a white dagger in a pale hand.
Helter and Ariel
Her line crosses that of the Magister Elías, necromancer of the Arcoms Cosmar lineage, Helter’s engenderer-artificer, who forged Helter by splitting his essence as a weapon against Graz’zt. Graz’zt raped Tel and claims Helter as “son and heir”. The Fourth Circle chronicle speaks of the «maldito demonio de seis dedos que violó la catedral» (“cursed six-fingered demon who raped the cathedral”); the cathedral is Thel.
Guide of the Descent and Lady of Pain
The guide “Tel” of the Descent’s opening sections, tied to the Castle of the Just, is Thel. She guides the group through the Second Circle, where Helter falls with Minos and enters the Purple Tower; there he finds Helen, who also “counts herself a lady of pain”.
As the Lady of Pain she is the silent regent of Sigil and governs the Doors; the Lady appears petrified in a cathedral, Notre Dame.
Death
In the sealed Hall of Speakers, as the “last Lady of Pain” of a dynasty (“of Tel and of El”), she took off her helmet and called Helter “son”: “Save us.” Helter, possessed and mutated after the rite of the Vas, killed her with the black obsidian dagger.
- Her helmet fell down the stairs to the primary plane.
- Her head was tied to the arm of Ariel, her other son.
- Her soul travels by sea, under custody, toward Morán, the candidate others chose as new Lady of Pain; Hades himself spoke, and a brother is involved.
With its lock gone, Sigil lay open to teleportation and to Graz’zt; the Band of Dissolution now holds it as a spine.
