Name and origin
The Decadian apparatus writes “Tod / Set”; the Forum says “Set”, the lesser syncretic apparatus “Tod”. The Egyptian Set, primordial figure of the cyclical chaos of the Nile and the desert and opponent of Osiris, fused with Tod, a Decadian figure of parallel function whose etymology is not preserved.
Depiction
He is shown enthroned and crowned, with the angular head of a beast like no animal, holding a whole scepter and a broken one. Wall reliefs show the harvest, the same fields burning, and the fields green again.
Doctrine
His chaos is cyclical, not absolute: destruction and renewal alternate, and chaos operates order rather than negating it. Mithra is the sun and public light, the sustained oath and continuity of order; Tod-Set is cyclical darkness, periodic rupture and renewal through liberating destruction. Decadian orthodoxy upholds both cults as poles of one apparatus. Tod-Set governs:
- the violent renewal of decadent institutions;
- dynastic change: a lineage’s fall falls under Tod-Set, its rise under Mithra;
- great cyclical crises, such as the Great Magical Schism and the Fifteen-Year Hiatus of Ardisvala;
- marginal contact with the Ante-Inferno and heterodox doctrines, tolerated under watch.
Cult
The Forum of Set, an underground temple in the Ardisvala mega-dungeon, is the cult’s seat: a hypostyle hall with reliefs of Set and a central altar, run by the high priest Marius Urianius with lesser figures such as Estefanía and Melisario. The Cult of Set is the cult faction; the Imperial Church sustains the worship. Heschius Ban and Debellaton are linked to Set’s functions in syncretic doctrine.
Established in the primordial imperial era and codified by successive Decadian reforms, the cult is active in the present cycle.
