Maristo the Condemned is the infernal facet of Maristo’s soul: a paladin of the Eye of Helm who exists as a Lost One in the Ante-Inferno and the deep circles of the Pit, while the same soul continues above as the Aide-de-Camp of the One God.

Nature
Maristo exists in two parallel cosmological lines:
- Main Maristo: paladin, founder of an order and Aide-de-Camp of the One God after the Three Crowns of 1370 DR; husband of Cloeh, father of Amitlai, trained in the Sacred Order of Tanastias. Alive and central to the Pantheon.
- Maristo the Condemned: the same soul as a Lost One below. He is not the death of the main Maristo but a parallel fold in infernal geography; the soul acts as Aide-de-Camp above and as condemned below at the same time, with internal consistency kept and its doctrine modified on each plane.
The cosmology of the Pit admits such parallel folds for major souls. Maristo is one of the best-documented cases, alongside the Arian–Auro–Adam line (Adam Harlequin) and the Patience–Peysen line (the Pit–the Unnameable).
Iconography
His image parallels the Aide-de-Camp’s, with changes:
- Armor of the Eye, with Helm’s Eye on the breastplate; below, the Eye is half-lidded, “as one who sees without finishing seeing”.
- Longsword resting in dark water — not the water of the castle foundations of Torregrises but water of the Acheron touching the edge of the Ante-Inferno.
- Helm on the right arm, with a central dent made during the descent by a blow the Chorus does not specify.
- Long half-sunken cloak; a leather gorget blackened beyond the standard of the armor, a blackening specific to the Pit.
The two silhouettes behind him (Torregrises and another double city) are replaced by the portal of the Ante-Inferno on one side and the Acheron on the other.
Doctrine of the Eye
The rule of the Aide-de-Camp, “see first, strike after, not the reverse”, still holds. In the Pit, however, seeing first means seeing one’s own descent: the Eye shows him the state of his own fall. His blow is pedagogical rather than orthodox combat: he strikes so that the infernal being he faces recognizes its own condition, not to destroy it. The Chorus of the Descent records that Maristo the Condemned is not Maristo defeated, but Maristo whose function has been modified to work in infernal geography without doctrinal contradiction.
Role in the Ante-Inferno
He is a secondary guiding presence among the Lost Ones. The main guide of the descent is Swedenborg, with whom he forms a dyad documented at several stages:
- Swedenborg guides with the Lamp of Hope: the promise of possible return.
- Maristo guides with the Eye: confronting souls with what they do not want to look at.
His condemned companions include Ärsvan, Sven, Helter, Bertrand and the harlequin avatar of Arian.
The offer of life
Kaxathros and Coyote hold, in the shared cosmology, the faculty of offering life to the Aide-de-Camp. If they offered it to the Condemned, he would cease to be a Lost One and rise as a fully restored Aide-de-Camp. The infernal order registers this as possible but not documented; in the present cycle he remains a Lost One with no active offer. The faculty may not be exercisable over the Pit without coordination with Swedenborg or with the apparatus of the Ante-Inferno.
Conflicting accounts
Whether he knows he is the same soul as the Aide-de-Camp:
- Full knowledge: he acts consciously as the infernal fold, bringing the modified doctrine of the Eye to lost souls the Sacred Order cannot reach — a voluntary vocation.
- Partial knowledge: he acts by reflex, as Arian’s soul does in Adam Harlequin — an involuntary ontological displacement.
In the documented descent he has never presented himself as the Aide-de-Camp.
Whether he is still Aide-de-Camp of the One God:
- Some voices hold that he is: condemnation did not strip the office, making him an agent of the One God in infernal geography.
- Others hold that he is not: the Pit has its own order, and he is a paladin of the Eye without active investiture, keeping the armor out of inertia.
Open questions
- When and how he became a Lost One is not fixed.
- Whether Kaxathros or Coyote have ever tried to offer him life is not recorded.
