Torchavento is a Malebranche (devil) of the Second Circle in the Descent, formerly the tormentor of the damned souls of lust. His name evokes “torcer el viento” (“to twist the wind”; torch + vento).

After the group killed Calcabrina, another Malebranche, Torchavento is left “in debt” and offers information in exchange. He has lost his sword and gear. Calcabrina is one of the Malebranche of Cantos XXI–XXII of Dante’s Inferno, so a second Malebranche fits the Dantean structure of the Second Circle. His willingness to negotiate after Calcabrina’s fall suggests a diabolical hierarchy in which the death of a superior opens opportunities.
