The Law of Constant Equilibrium is a cosmological principle of the Inferno that governs its dynamics. Hell is designed to “pull downward,” and any attempt to ascend draws all of Hell’s forces against the ascenders.

Effects
- The group cannot use ascent as an escape; descent is the only viable route.
- It explains the disappearance of the castle (it ascended, so it was gone).
- Guardians of each stratum enforce it in the Descent gesta (campaign-cycle) of Dante’s Inferno: Minos classifies the souls, Cerberus guards the Third Circle, and Plutus guards the Fourth. The City of Dis is the frontier of lower Hell.
Open questions
- Its origin: possibly an echo of cosmologies of the Acheron, or the Archive’s own reading of Dante.
