Torregrises is the capital and chief port of Tanastias, “the bosom of the hidden cities”, ruled by King Sabas. Its name comes from piles built of gray quarry stone, to which the jellyfish are said to have once contributed.

Description

Built on the foundations of so-called “elven” ruins, it is a jumble of medieval buildings and alleys mixing architecture and culture of many origins. It is an “invisible city” wrapped in a protective arcane veil, a Mythal. Underground foundations, the Foundations, connect it with its luminous twin Torreluces; Adimanto explored passages into them, and creatures of the Bestiary of Torregrises live there.

History and rule

  • Arian arrived here in his first gesta (campaign-cycle) of the Artifact.
  • The Seat of the Storms, dragged from Andgara, destroyed the old city of lights, which some knew as Camelot.
  • Sabas extends his great hand over all the domains of Argivah, with fragile tolerance for the Sacred Order. The city joins royal power and spiritual-magical authority.
  • Sabas keeps the Sabasian Lyceum (rector Clean, guardians Sadi and Madi). His rival Sucor acts from “the mobile temple of his Motorcycle”; the Shadow Corporation is the resistance.
  • Final destruction: Storm 25, flood and freezing, narrated in the novel Pablo y Miranda by Federico, “King of Storms”, from the 25th floor of the tallest building.

Grey Towers

The Les Libertateurs gesta names “Grey Towers, Pennsylvania” (1784) as the destination of the gear of the telescope stolen from London, claimed by the dragon of Albion, and as “the seat of the Storms in Grey Towers”, cradle of the fallen line from which Washingstorm descends.

Buenos Aires

“There is a Buenos Aires that is Torregrises, and a Torregrises that is Buenos Aires.” Its uchronic counterpart is described as “Ciudad Refugio, tierra de Neutrales” (“City of Refuge, land of Neutrals”), whose first uchronic invasion was English. Torregrises is also represented geographically in Uchronic Paris.
