Role
His death is the grievance that Colonel Carmín, the Restorer, invokes as the cornerstone of his regime: the “wounded loyalty” that justified the settling of Federal Power in the 1830s. In 1838 it still serves as justification for every measure, decree and movement of the masorqueros. Carmín built his power on the martyrology of Eldorio.
Dead for years, Eldorio does not govern or speak in Torregrises, under whose name (Santa María de Torregrises) the Rosista capital operates. He survives as a name in Carmín’s mouth, a red flag over the imagined scaffold the Restorer raises whenever he needs to remind the people why federal order is the only alternative to Unitarian chaos.
