Storm 25 is the final apocalyptic event of Torregrises: the storm that closes the city’s cycle, bringing a flood and, at the same time, the city’s definitive freezing.

Description

The flood comes as ordinary water, then as fury, cools to an impossible temperature and freezes into solid surf. The waters freeze instantly over the people they cover, leaving ice sculptures of bodies in their last gesture.

Its number, 25, echoes the larger cosmogony of the shared cosmos: the 25 Suns of tradition (with Arian as the 25th sun incarnate), the “day 25” of creation in Torreluces, and the 25th floor from which Federico watches.

Prophecy

The Gray Cosmogony preserves a priests’ prophecy: “Llegará el día en que las aguas treparán las laderas. Las laderas no fueron hechas para retener agua. La ciudad fue.” (“The day will come when the waters climb the slopes. The slopes were not made to hold water. The city was.“) Storm 25 fulfills it literally: the waters climb, stay, freeze and never recede. The freezing admits no restoration; a returning Torregrises would be another city, with another number of suns.

Floor 25

One tower survives: Floor 25, where Federico, King of Storms, writes the storm’s chronicle from its windowsill.

Depiction

The plate shows the city under frozen surf, the lone tower of Floor 25, and two bearded faces in the sky: gods sent by the Storm, watching their work. Captions read TORMENTA 25 — SEDE DE LAS TORMENTAS (“Storm 25 — Seat of Storms”) and CAMELOT — SITIO Y CONGELADO POR LA IRA DEL CIELO (“Camelot — besieged and frozen by the wrath of heaven”).

In the works

The storm has its own chapter in Pablo and Miranda (final edition, pp. 134–149).

Open questions

  • The two bearded faces are perhaps gods of the old Pantheon, perhaps the Cosmogonic Duo.
