Martín Segovia is a baqueano (frontier guide) of the southern frontier. He knows the pasture inch by inch, reads wind and mud before any map, and leads parties between forts by roads that appear in no file of the Comandancia.

Background

Two of his sons served in the southern fort. The authorities registered them as deserters. Segovia rejects that verdict: he insists his sons would not have abandoned the flag, that they “disappeared,” and that something or someone erased them from the world without accounting for it. This conviction anchors him to the frontier and makes him a guide for those who also investigate the disappearances of the south.

He accompanied a group from the frontier post to the Palace of Mud in the Protection of the Plata, without asking more than needed and without losing the thread of his missing sons.
