The Sacred Order is an ancient order of masters founded in the Black Forest of Andgara in the first cosmos, whose great precept is never to make a pact with the Demon. It raised Arian and exiled him for breaking that precept.

History

In its first centuries the Order was based in the Black Forest of Andgara, the continent of the first cosmos, before the Rift. Its masters took in children whose line had drawn the attention of dark powers and raised them for a whole century before returning them to the world. In the Order’s words, they raised not heroes but the hero’s companions.

Valteran, high master of Andgara’s last century, raised Arian among the rescued children of that generation.

Arian’s exile

In his youth Arian made a pact with a drow priestess to save Valteran’s life. The Order did not absolve him. The recovered Valteran dismissed him with the words “te has condenado a ti mismo, y probablemente a muchos otros” (“you have condemned yourself, and probably many others”), and he was sent across the ocean to Torregrises. For the Order a disciple who breaks the precept is not rehabilitated but exiled.

Diaspora

The Rift split Angara and destroyed the Black Forest. The masters scattered with codices, sigils and two or three surviving children, and settled new seats:

  • Tanastias, where the first pantheon was remade.
  • Torregrises, destination of Arian’s exile, which later received other dismissed disciples.
  • Minor enclaves across the shared cosmos, each keeping one or two masters and a few disciples.

In the present cycle its presence is residual; late disciples often receive its doctrine without knowing the Order’s name.

Doctrine

The Order’s teaching is reduced to two points:

  • The sword that is not drawn without reason. A martial art: whoever draws pays, and whoever keeps it sheathed without reason also pays.
  • The great precept: you shall never make a pact with the Demon. It admits no gloss and no exception, not even a pact made for love. The Order teaches it knowing some disciple will break it. Whoever makes such a pact to save a loved one receives what they ask and loses what they were.

Members

The Order publishes no genealogies. Records name:

Arcoms Cosmar was not of the Order (he was Duward and passed through Mithranor), but his workshop received some whom the Order sent to learn complementary crafts.

Conflicting accounts

  • The Order recognizes The 4 A’s without having trained them all.
  • Another tradition, in the entries of Maristo and the records of Tanastias, makes the Order their full trainer: sages and druids devoted to preserving pre-flood knowledge, spiritually seated in Tanastias across the sea from Torregrises, led by Dietrus and barely tolerated by King Sabas, who distrusted their influence.
