Pionero is a wagon driver of great physical size who travels the southern frontier with his carts. At first sight he inspires a certain tenderness, from his size and bearlike calm; longer acquaintance reveals an iron solidity. He knows the southern roads as one who traveled them when there were no roads, and his strength is a working tool, not bluster.

He arrived in the area of the Fort of the Federal Star in the first moves of the gesta (campaign-cycle), among the varied group that the regime and its adversaries pushed toward the edge of the frontier. “Pionero” is the nickname that stuck.
