Nigrina of Torregrises is a hostess of the Torregrises Air Company in Torregrises who survived the hijacking of the airship Águila Imperial and married the Young Savage, the passenger who took five bullets for her.

Description

Her plate shows her in the boarding hall of the Águila Imperial, on the High Torregrises–Mad Jungle route: a young woman in a militarized uniform (double-breasted jacket, knee-length skirt, dark patterned stockings, boots, tilted cap) with the company’s two-headed eagle badge on her chest. Her name suggests darkness (Latin niger). She was an air passenger before joining the staff and kept the habit of gripping things with both hands when the air moves. She holds the fourth grade under the Torregrises doctrine of trades: enough to run a full service, not enough to hold a fight.

History

A hired killer sent by Sucor boarded at High Torregrises with false papers and a short revolver that the boarding inspection missed, and opened fire in flight. The Young Savage, a passenger little known before, stepped in and took five bullets without fully going down. The airship made a forced landing in the Mad Jungle; the only death was the killer’s. In the company chronicler’s phrase, Nigrina aportó lágrimas al charco de sangre del pasillo (“added tears to the pool of blood in the aisle”).

The two married in the Mad Jungle, where he convalesced slowly. Nigrina gave up the uniform and stayed there.

Miranda witnessed and narrated the episode; Paulus of Alexandria, as Pablo of Torregrises, signed its final edition.
