Description
- He has no name in the records.
- His mixed blood gave him a skin color that fits no register. His eyes change tone with his mood, a phenomenon the fort’s neighbors remark on quietly and that he has never explained.
- He covers half his face with a pollerón and wears countryman’s clothes.
- He needs water with an urgency beyond ordinary thirst, almost ritual, almost physiological.
- He is neither Indian nor white: the in-between category the pampa produces, which neither Federals nor Unitarians know how to name.
Role
He is the born explorer: curious, silent, able to investigate what others prefer not to touch. He combines the temper of a man forged by hard training, the kind the troops call un sacado (one picked for bearing as much as skill), with the instinct of a tracker who reads signs where most see empty landscape.
Open questions
- The origin of his need for water is unclear.
