History

  • Axum. He ruled the Triple Kingdom of Axum (200–230 AD), held a staff of power and was called “the one who demands”. The first Ethiopian (Ge’ez) writing refers to him directly. He was known in Abyssinia, Axum and Shoa.
  • Palmyra. With his companion demon KAXA he was a vassal of Zenobia of Palmyra in the late eastern Roman Empire, when queens dealt with demons to stay in power.
  • Rome. Aurelian captured him. Before the imperial audience, ahead of his execution, he pronounced the triad of the fall — “vas a caer, vas a caer, vas a caer” (“you will fall”, three times) — and proclaimed himself Néorex (“New King”), a title he kept. Twice a hundred years, he said, and Rome falls: it fell in 276 AD and definitively in 476 AD.
  • Escape. Imprisoned under the Sublician Bridge, consecrated to the Furies, he escaped execution with the help of Juan the Hunter and fled with KAXA to Broken Reach / Axum.
  • Gnostic turn. He adopted a Gnostic cosmology — the demiurge as an octopus or monstrous reptile, himself as allogene (alien, of the luminous race) — and refounded the Axumite genealogy from himself: Noah → Ityopys → Axsumawy → GRDT.
  • Revenge. As Malakya he had six avenging sons — Sum, Nafas, Bagio, Kuduki, Akhorro and Fasheba — who killed the Roman generals responsible for his humiliation. The revenge took a hundred years.
  • Shoa. He founded a domain in Shoa (Abyssinia) around 1900 A.D.A.

The diminishment by Maleika

In Ethiopia, Maleika, a human warrior nun of the highest art, approached him. He violated her; in time she devoured his testicles, and the demon’s strength stayed in her stomach. He kept his knowledge but lost the strength to impose it. Every later appearance of Graz’zt, under any name, is a diminished version.

Maleika bore him twelve children, matched to the twelve zodiac platforms of Antiterra. Separately, Lucifer fathered daughters with her. Elaina kidnapped the twelve for the Yalemari.

Later revelations

  • True name: Tyriel. Under every mask — GRDT, Néorex, Graz’zt, Ludovico Sforza — the lord of the Triple Kingdom is Tyriel.
  • The cell of Athas. Imprisoned in Athas, “the Dark Sun”, he wrote and systematized dual magic and the game of the platforms; those walls are Vault U-571. The gods forbade the codification and erased it in the Styx. He is the infernal scribe of a fire that Paulus of Alexandria had earlier stolen “like Prometheus”.
  • Twenty-four fingers. The twelve platforms are inscribed in his flesh; he has twenty-four fingers, the complete Ars Memoria no other holder reaches.
  • The Sphinx of Giza is one of his manifestations; part of his endgame is played before it.
  • Master of the Carnival. The Carnival of Venice has three phases of ownership: GRDT’s nominal gala; Lucifer’s political lobby with the evacuation to the Refuge; and at the end Graz’zt/Tyriel revealed as full master (the Basilica-casino, “Regulators invited”), with Lucifer as third party.
  • Infernal London (1914). The march on Infernal London, the capture at Buckingham with the Helmet in hand, and the Great War are a conditional future, not the present of 1901.
  • His dark double. The Great Khan of Nightmares is his front man and the dark double of Cakravartin: a rebel servant, a two-headed split of the chaos that took Mecanus, one of whose faces Soliman shows.

The triple kingdom

The Triple Kingdom of Azzagrat (layers 45–47 of the Abyss) mirrors the Triple Kingdom of Axum (coast, plateau, highlands). Triplicity marks Graz’zt in all his incarnations.
