The Eiffel Tower Tournament is the culminating event of the cycle of the Regulators in Antiterra, held in ~1890 A.D.A.: a race up a giant greased pole for a single wish. It was organized by the Great Khan under the viceregal patronage of Lord Gaul.

The tower and the prize
The Eiffel Tower has grown to ~1,100 meters, three times its real size: a prismatic greased pole with electric barriers and traps. The winner must reach the top with the three portions of the Gem of Creation, place them in the Cup of a Hundred Wishes (bound to a pit fiend’s soul), drink, and make a wish. The Great Khan held two portions; the third lay inside the Tarrasque, a colossal bull kaiju carrying Seth in its entrails.
The seven factions
- The Regulators — the companions’ band.
- American Soldiers — led by a relative of Colonel Bliss (Fort Bliss), with a Zeppelin.
- Diamonds — yugoloths/daemons; Lord Gaul traded his soul to them for the million souls of Paris.
- Devils — an embassy of Infernal London, aiming to move the infernal seat to Sigil.
- Nightshades / Shadows — cosmic nihilists of Erebus.
- The Invisibles — modern-age demons who end up possessing the American Soldiers.
- The House — the Great Khan, whose sphere of annihilation circles Paris.
Outcome
Maleika, the nun, raced up faster than anyone. El Fabuloso, the Gnome, reached the summit inside his golem Boro, drank from the Cup and wished:
“Que la Gema de la Creación vaya a la bóveda U-5-7-1 de Union” (“Let the Gem of Creation go to vault U-5-7-1 of Union”)
Union is the city of the Mercane. He did not ask to found Sigil, as expected; the group saw it as betrayal.
Seth tried to interfere from inside the Tarrasque; Benetton struck him with a sword. Then Faragod, the electric god, appeared after five hundred years of waiting, fell like a bolt and pinned Seth to the top of the Tower with a wrestling move. Seth lay dying in a lake of blue blood at the Tower’s foot; Sven tasted it.
Consequences
- The Regulators won Paris, the million souls (residents with green bands, later rising as zombies under the band), the secrets of the cathedral and control of the eclipse over the city.
- Paris began turning into Sigil, the City of Doors, but the process stayed incomplete.
- The body of Paul Claudel, Parisian facet of Paulus of Alexandria, killed elsewhere in the same cycle, appeared nailed to the Tower’s door.
