Geopolitics of Antiterra — 1888 is the political map of Antiterra in 1888 A.D.A., a turning point before the final cycle that closes in 1901, when the world is split among four powers: England, the demon-ruled East, America and Atlantis.

England
The dominant power leads an international alliance; the Western system orders itself around it without any treaty saying so. It controls France through the uchronic viceroyalty: the bald viceroy, Lord Gaul, runs Paris with Baatezu disguised as redcoats. England rules by contract and trickery, not visible bayonets: it sends agents and signatures rather than troops.
The East — Mongolia, China, Russia
These lands are full of demons, governed by a “Khan of Nightmares” whose line dates back to the time of Marco Polo. The Chronicler of the Plata identifies him with the Great Khan of the shared cosmos: a two-headed vrock, lord of nightmares, guardian of the Platform of Pisces and future coordinator of the Eiffel Tower Tournament. Surface rulers are figureheads; real power works from the hidden regions of the World of Dreams.
America
An independent former colony where younger forces operate. Its Civil War ended about thirty years before 1888 (around 1858 A.D.A.), and the continent is still settling into its postwar shape. Dragons are waking on the side of the Indians; the chronomantic body of A.D.A. records this as a telluric rebalancing of forces lost in the war. The younger forces include restored native cult-cosmologies, recent migrations with unclassified doctrines, and unforeseen emerging figures.
Atlantis
A hidden power manipulating from the shadows. Its agents work in ports, bars, freighters and whalers, not in chancelleries.
The central conflict
The visible conflict is East against West, with America playing its own game. The one that matters is directed by Atlantis from the black heart of Africa, where Cakravartin upholds the doctrine of the Game from his undersea throne, while Graz’zt (“Graz’zt”), in his Eastern avatars, plays the opposing hand.
The next episode is the Temporal Apocalypse of 1889; the phase ends with the final cycle of 1901 (see Band of the Dissolution).
Open questions
- The Chronicler of the Plata’s hypothesis, left open by the archive, places Atlantis’s operational center not under the ocean but in the black heart of Africa.
- What America’s “younger forces” are is not fully specified.
