Nature

Seth keeps his original archetype: the dark brother who murdered Osiris, left after Horus’s mutilation with a single hand to count what he lost. In Antiterra he is a divinity associated with the Earth — the original Terra, now separated, not the parallel Antiterra. He is a declared enemy of the cosmic order of the Regulators and of the system of Platforms and Guardians that the Cakravartin sustains from Atlantis.

History

  • Release. The Deep Ones, not fully aware of the danger, freed him from his Atlantean underwater prison. Maleika, in one of her facets, communicated with him in the form of a turtle.
  • The Tournament. Seth was represented by the Tarrasque, which carried him as a material vehicle. Inside it was a fragment of the Gem of Creation, a ruby. Near the climax Seth tried to interfere from within.
  • Death. Faragod, the lightning god of Antiterra (an electric Horus), descended with a wrestling-style sneak attack and nailed him atop the Eiffel Tower. Impaled and dying, Seth bled into the water around the tower, forming a lake of blue blood. Sven tasted it.
  • The Hand. The Hand of Set, the hand left to him, was kept as a relic after his death; Lotario carries it in one of his phases.

Later additions

  • Seth released the tarrasque of Paris some twenty years before the final cycle, with “the Stone in its belly”.
  • A divine hand of Seth rests in the tomb of the Medici, beside the hand of Luca.
  • Seth is the father of Sobek, the thirteen-year-old boy who mediates between newcomers and the lord of Anubis’s divine farm.

Conflicting accounts

  • One account places a Gem of Creation fragment inside the Tarrasque; another speaks of “the Stone in its belly”, possibly an echo of the Stone of the Apocalypse, later hidden in the belly of a tarrasque simulacrum in Mexico. Whether these are one motif or two artifacts is unresolved.

Open questions

  • Whether the hand in the Medici tomb is the same Hand of Set that Lotario carries.
