Lord Gaul is the bald uchronic viceroy of Paris in the Antiterra cycle, served by red devils in place of redcoats. The attack on Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower Tournament happen under his rule; he was stabbed to death in a garden beside the cathedral.

Description

His office belongs to an alternate history: France, after defeating Napoleon, left under an English viceroy. He is bald and severe, in a dark frock coat with epaulettes and decorations, fine gloves, at a desk spread with maps of Paris and unexplained steam machines.

He governs with devils. The baatezu are his officers, and red devils, often literally, are his guard and street army where the British Empire deployed redcoats. Ordinary eyes miss the difference; those who notice rarely live long. Graz’zt is named as the shadow he carries.

Role

  • The attack on Notre-Dame, where the Lady awakens and the Great Khan tries to profane her, happens under his administrative shadow.
  • The Eiffel Tower Tournament, where Faragod pins Seth and the Fabulous One wins the cup and betrays, is held with his approval.

He wrote the journal [[en/Paris_Bien_Vale_una_Misa|“París Bien Vale una Misa”]] (“Paris Is Well Worth a Mass”), on the attack, the tournament and the Lady’s resurrection.

Death

He was killed with a dagger in a small garden beside Notre-Dame, a remnant of the Alpha & Omega Garden; the Regulators, or agents close to them, found him. He is pictured slumped on a bench, sabre half-drawn, the journal under his left hand, a cut rose stem under his fallen top hat.

Earlier echo (1784)

In the Antigua/1784 arc of Les Libertateurs there is a “Gaul, governor in the Paris area”, and a “Lord Gaul” sits at the Host Poker table, per the Events of Antiterra: the same Parisian power across a century, 1717/1784 to the Belle Époque.
