Sogol is a ring-shaped city built around a lake, “a different edition of the possibility of the nexus of the cosmos and of the confusion of the planes”: the city of creation, connected to the planes by doors that are mostly switched off.

Layout

“Imagine the city is a doughnut”: a closed ring of wards around a lake. In order:

the Cleft Ward (government), the Guide Hall (public life), the Foundry and forge (smokeless factories), the Hive, the marketplace, and uphill the residential Ladies Ward (also The Lady’s Ward), sloping down to the lake.

Around the lake are forests and marshes; in the lake “there is something like a passage and a tower”. A sun “rises on one side and sets on the other”, crossing different sides of the ring in alternating cycles of day and night.

Technology

Everything is “a bit more evolved”: lamps but no electric light (“electricity is strange”), a 1950s style “but modern-ish”, and fantastic cars. Furniture can be flown magically into an empty hall.

Doors

The doors connect Sogol with the planes. By default they are off, though not all, and “somehow they may perhaps be activated”. A departure from the Malvinas to Sogol is dated 1954. A company of travelers performed the first portal activation in the city’s history: “do you understand that you are the first to activate a portal in Sogol?”

Land and law

Land is owned and disputed; among the inhabitants are the saved souls, “the ones in Sogol fighting over land”. La Jabalina owns land across the river, on a “very beautiful” hill among “half-palace houses”, and is building a house there.

The city’s explicit rule is “the city does not export wars”; hence “it is a city that has to be an example”.

The Kids of Sogol

The gesta of the Kids of Sogol continues outside the city. Dandy, Lucio, Adriel and Lem added Lirio to their company and went from the temple and the Mists to the Road of Mertylmane, the Halls of Frost, Karlstorf and the Threshold of Aries. All five are alive and have not yet come before Calíope. The return through New Edinburgh is postponed.

Sogol figures in the mercane Sidqa’s plans for a branch of Union, and in Dandy’s dream as an empty Hall of the Orators.

Conflicting accounts

  • Sogol is another edition of the same nexus as Sigil.
  • Sogol is contained within Sigil: “Sogol, Sigil, one empty, but at the same time, who is living there?”

All accounts agree it is bigger and better made than Sigil.

Open questions

  • How many doors there are and what reactivates them; who governs, and what upholds the law.
  • The currency; whom the saved souls fight, and how land is allotted.
  • Who left the Malvinas in 1954; whether a mentioned “1966” is real; what Logos Sogol designates.
