Description
He speaks with his body more than his mouth; he wears white and carmine face paint, small swept-back horns and long, many-pocketed sleeves. Raised among soup kitchens and asylums with Adriel, Lucio and Lem, he went east young and returned as something the Hive could not classify. His family’s one origin story: a rich great-grandmother who lost everything, and left us. He seeks what that “everything” was. He travels with his aunt Barbarella.
History
- Temple of Ashtar of the Ice. He loosed spiders through the door, won the fire beetles with a whistle, and hand-harvested eight doses of sleep from the frozen pool’s amber lotuses.
- The aunt’s bargain. Barbarella offered her two daggers, black obsidian and white ice, for the hammer and chisel of the angel. The company refused; in the fight a kiss drained Adriel, and the aunt ended up inside the black dagger. Dandy took the ice dagger and split from the group to follow his aunt and the Lady of the Ice.
- Uken. Beyond the blizzard, Uken told him the family story: his line held high posts in several wars; his great-grandmother was sealed in obsidian; whoever is in the black glass now unwillingly serves a general among Caloria’s enemies; he can help his kin by working for it. The ancient obsidian of Nothenvell matches the dagger’s. Dandy went to New Edinburgh, leaving a cairn for the others.
- Return. He came back pursued by a tower of fire, made eight lotus-poisoned arrows, found an ambush under a bridge and killed a yeti with black glass. The heritage now bears a war name, Ajani, which he never says aloud.
- Halls of Frost. Azidem’s help had a price. He recognized the shaman’s tiefling companion as kin and let him go after a private talk, learning that Calíope knows Ajani’s true name. He wants to free her from servitude, believing a return to the War of Blood will follow; his friends fear what a freed power might do.
- Karlstorf. He spent his reserved lotus to put a bear to sleep and free Lucio, taking wounds. At court he staged the Halls as a shadow play so Burkestein would see an ally in Sidqa; it moved the hall, but the trade permit stayed pending.
- Gunhilda. Intimacy and a promise of flight. The queen kept her youthful phylactery but gave him the ring of her warrior years, which he shared with Lem; she stayed at court, fearing her husband would notice. The kingdom he promised her exists only in his words.
- Later. He dreamed of Sogol’s empty Hall of Speakers, an unease echoed in Lirio, and clashed with Adriel over questioning his aunt in the black dagger.
- Threshold of Aries. He ended a captive’s agony, tried to parley with the knights, then fought with illusions and tricks, sheltering in a tree from the spike volley. He survives with the other four.
Open questions
- His true name is not recorded.
- Black glass recurs around him (an arch’s rebus, a key’s edge); its link to the Obsidian Marilith is noted without explanation.
