The Phoenix is a unique female fire creature, reborn in the fire of creation and bound by pact to La Jabalina.

TypeCreature
Spanish entryFénix

Description

She is the size of “a big puma. A wolf, a huge dog”, and can be carried in the arms. She ends “extinguished in the infinite possibility of the becoming of fire and will”. In rebirth (Rebirth) “fire comes out of her eyes… she catches fire”, and she “emerges shaking off lava and magma”. Both happen in the deepest elemental plane of fire, where “the fire of creation still beat”.

Roles

  • Measure. Her body shows the health of the realm and world; she is moved “to safe keeping”, not used as a weapon.
  • Light. She “brought the sun out of darkness. Gave light to worlds”. Reborn, she says: «Voy a ser el sol de la nueva ciudad si quieren» (“I will be the sun of the new city if you wish”).
  • Gift. After rebirth a feather falls into each companion’s hair, each with an expendable, “not permanent” charm. She seals a pact: “you have my gifts; when you invoke me, there I will be”. Its price is not fixed. Having carried her, La Jabalina is so bound.

She can be ridden, and a temple exists “to heal the Phoenix”.

Nests

Stacked on the same ground: the Nest of the Phoenixes, a buried ancient city that “was at times the dragon’s lair”; the old nest of the Phoenix, “evolved into El Caldero”; the region’s Phoenix Nest, which “gives primary things to this city”; and El Caldero itself, over a focus of living fire. Beneath lies “the sleeping Phoenix”, said to be “awakening”.

A phoenix was seen rising during Sogol. Also recorded are a Phoenix river legend tied to the Caldero, a Phoenix painting in the mansion, and in Lázima an entity called Anidando el Fénix (“Nesting the Phoenix”) that can be “reinforced”.

Conflicting accounts

  • Spinks (“Phoenix Spinks”), a rideable being saying “when you need me or the one who carried me… call me, call him”, may be the Phoenix’s name or a bearer’s.
  • Belicio or Benicio, linked to “Nesting the Phoenix in Lázima”, “opens his eyes” just before the Phoenix ignites: a witness to the rebirth, or the Phoenix under another name.

Open questions

  • Do the dragon and the Phoenix share the Nest in rivalry or succession?
  • What “primary things” does the nest give the Caldero? Where is Lázima, and what does the river legend tell?
  • Is the sleeping Phoenix the one the company carried? How do the charm and her body’s signs work?
