Background

A boy of good family who ran off to the Alley, twelve years ago he went through “the matter of the host” (lo de la hostia), one of Sogol’s street secrets: a kiss of the sacred that made his brown skin luminous and his eyes glow, and cost him his home, his childhood temple and his surname. He became one of the four of the Gatehouse. Recently someone recognized him — “vos sos el niño que estuvo ahí” (“you’re the boy who was there”) — and said “las manos son manos que curan” (“the hands are hands that heal”). He has since trained as a priest of Ashtar, a bond so jealous that no other deity can heal him. The planar master Uken spoke to him of inheritances.

History

  • First day. At the temple he held his shield on the threshold under two arrows, prayed mid-fight and was answered, and with the command “¡vuélvete!” (“turn back!”) made grown men turn. He took his tools from the foot of the Arch of the Not Yet.
  • Second day. Joining hammer and chisel, he made the one-winged angel appear; he refused to trade the tools for the aunt’s two daggers.
  • Third day. In Ungarn, after a night visit left two marks on his neck, he was dominated, gave up his tools as a guarantee and returned as an emissary; they came back to him on leaving the Mists.
  • Fourth day. He summoned the angel to bring Lem back and heard its price. On the Road of Mertylmane his foresight saved the convoy from a black-ice creature. He asked for the augury about Caloria and, facing the Halls of Frost, said: “allá hay un mal mayor” (“there is a greater evil there”).

Later events

Before allying with Sidqa, he asked the oracle whether this would bring peace to the region; it answered no. The company took the Halls anyway.

Gravely wounded befriending a polar bear, he was saved by Dandy’s last lotus. Returning with Lem, he found the bear dead with a predator inside it and calculated the explosion that freed Lem. At the Threshold of Aries his foresight warned of a spike discharge; an ice wall shielded four companions, and all five survived. The temple’s protection of a year and a day keeps running.
