Calíope is a queen in the living gesta of Sogol, ruler of the ice kingdom, who disputes the crown of the great king Burkestein and is held responsible for the alliance with the forces of cold against Caloria.

Reputation
Caravan mushers called her queen of Bythamar Betheril, Caloria’s southern neighbor, and brutal; “some say she is an ice queen”.
The augury
An augury cast in the snow gave the motive: «El ardor del amor ha traído el frío a Caloria.» (“The ardor of love has brought the cold to Caloria.“) The company read it as a spurned woman behind the war, most likely Calíope. Its second half was an order: «Divide y triunfarás.» (“Divide and you will triumph.“) It also speaks of a figure accompanying “the Lady”, without saying which Lady.
The ice kingdom
Before the descent to the Halls of Frost (the cold’s outpost in northern Caloria), she was named queen of the ice kingdom, one of the land’s two enchanted kingdoms (the other is the elves’ Aurora Polaris), with General Ajani as her new warlord. The country of Ice bears the signature of Loviatar; no kinship is claimed.
In Karlstorf, Burkestein placed her in an ice palace of Aurora Polaris, in the forest of needles, and credited her with the alliance with the cold and with sending Ajani. Earlier accounts distinguished Aurora Polaris from her kingdom.
Pending audience
Dandy, from what his relative said, came to believe she knows Ajani’s true name, and seeks it to break his relative’s servitude. The Threshold of Aries yielded after seven guardians fell, but the company has not yet reached Calíope.
Open questions
- Whether she was the one betrayed, or a champion of heat loved and betrayed a princess of cold.
- How the ice kingdom relates to Bythamar: one kingdom with two faces, or two kingdoms with one queen.
