Doctrine

  • In the city of doors, factions are philosophy clubs with municipal functions; the Athar are the club of the greater suspicion.
  • The gods, of temple or altar, thundering or whispering, are big, old, skillful beings. The Athar have seen their abodes and measured their miracles: none of it is God.
  • Many posit the Great Unknown, a force that asks for no temples. Some name it Ashtar; others in the same faith hold that naming it repeats the error they fled. The debate is internal and endless.

In Sogol

They recruit among those who lost everything to a god or its collectors. Known Athar in the living gesta include Uken, a planar master, and the circle that recognized and trained Lucio of the Hive in Sogol. On the first day, the doctrine is expounded in the Alley, Lucio is recognized, and Uken gives a parody speech in the Ice country.

The faction is depicted as colossal statues of gods face down in the dust, crowns and altars piled like confiscated evidence, and a few planar philosophers arguing among the rubble; one points to a vault whose fresco was scraped off, with a single column of cold light entering.
