Discovery

Leaving the pit, half the company destroyed and the rest dragging through the swamp back to Helix, the company made the most ominous find of the day: someone had loaded the jars onto the mule unseen. Nobody loaded them and nobody saw them loaded; they rocked with the mule’s gait, the dead inside. The message ran on its own among the living: every time they go down, they look more and more like death; they transform; they are disturbing what must not be disturbed.

Accusation

Later, before the stained altar of Helix, the Abbot called Silas “the sorcerer of the threshold who brought the vessels and opened the four canopic jars”. The accusation is recorded; it is not proven.

Open questions

  • Who carved the faces, who embalmed the fallen in the darkness of Barrowmaze, and who chose platinum are not recorded.
  • The four sons of Horus guard viscera for the journey of the dead; someone or something was preparing the company for its own. Los Condenados are now on that journey.
