The Dark Chapel is a sealed sacred structure beneath Caldero, site of the rite of Sacred Reconnection, in which devils, Pablo the Chronomancer, the Regulators and the Templars of Time clashed. It is a forbidden node in the city’s history and is described as the echo of the destruction of Notre-Dame in Paris.

Description
The chapel lies underground or half underground, beneath the crater of the dormant volcano on which Caldero stands, in a substructure not directly connected to the city’s usual tunnels. When open, its main entrance leads to a vaulted nave whose stained glass preserves alchemical diagrams, a lower crypt with a stone altar, and side passages toward the volcano’s heart. “Hidden Chapel” is used in apocryphal records, “Dark Cathedral” popularly, “Chapel of the Chronomancer” among archivists who know Pablo’s part. The Treatise of Sealed Places, attributed to the Decadian chronicler of Narsileon, counts it among cathedrals that close without falling.
On dark-moon nights the site shows anomalies: whispers, arcane symbols burned into the stone, echoes of chants in a language no one understands.
The rite of Sacred Reconnection
As Caldero began to gain fame as a city of magical convergences, devils, drawn by the temporal energy flowing under the volcano, sent an embassy to make secret agreements with certain local clerics and mages. The negative pole sought to penetrate the temporal fold.
Pablo the Chronomancer, a time traveler capable of brief jumps between moments of history, then appeared. He acted on his own designs, but the devils sought his gift, some texts say to manipulate key events on the mortal plane.
The Regulators and Templars of Time, the clandestine arm of temporal justice, known for immolating one of their own to restore chronological balance, intervened.
According to legend, in the main nave the devils, Pablo and a handful of initiates performed the rite of Sacred Reconnection, an attempt to anchor the timelines to a single truth. Conflict broke out when the Templars lit great torches for their purification ritual, forcing the infernal envoys back to their domains. Pablo, caught between both sides, made an emergency time jump, leaving a resonant echo still felt in the deepest crypts. He did not die there; he changed fold. Fragmentary Templar records place the immolation in the lower crypt.
Results
- The diabolic envoys withdrew without consolidating their pact.
- The nave was partly purified but marked with whispers and fire-burned symbols.
- Per the Decadian chronicler, the sealing kept Caldero’s negative pole stable for centuries, which made the crushing of Pope Borg of Caldero (~1812 AE) containable by the Ancient Giantess and the Sword of Judgment, and kept the infernal presence from co-opting the forming Blue House of Vala.
Parallel with Notre-Dame
The chapel belongs to a larger pattern: the Regulators and Templars of Time act across geographies, sealing demonic cycles by immolating one of their own.
| Aspect | Dark Chapel of Caldero | Notre-Dame of Paris |
|---|---|---|
| Agents | Regulators + Templars of Time | Time Bandits (partly Regulators) + Ärsvan |
| Chronomantic operator | Pablo, trapped in the rite | Ärsvan, operating with the sphere |
| Immolation | One Templar sacrificed | Ärsvan touches the sphere of annihilation for Ariadna |
| Opposing pole | Infernal envoys | Black form of the split Master + residual infernal presence |
| Result | Chapel sealed; echoes persist | Cathedral destroyed; Ärsvan to the Ante-Inferno; Paris opened |
Arkos holds that the two are the same cosmological event in two geographic folds.
Pablo
Pablo the Chronomancer is associated with Paulus of Alexandria (into which nine Pablo variants were consolidated), with Pablo, the Primordial Time Traveler and with the bearer of the Eisagogika. The chapel keeps one of his best-documented manifestations.
Present cycle (1824 AE)
- Closed to active worship; Caldero’s church considers it consecrated but sealed.
- Nocturnal anomalies: old chants, burned symbols, visions of diabolic envoys, echoes of Pablo’s jumps.
- The church watches who enters but does not enter; some members of La Jabalina have passed nearby without going in.
- Rumors, mentioned unnamed in Mascor Blancarba’s compilation, tell of a sinister group working with marks, chosen ones, the number Thirteen and planned sacrifices. If it serves the negative pole, it may seek to reopen the sealed rift.
The working doctrine treats the chapel as a dormant active node until shown otherwise. The archive expects La Jabalina’s entry into it to be a major event of the next cycle.
Conflicting accounts
- Some claim the chief diabolic envoy sealed a pact before escaping, which would explain the dark-moon anomalies and make the chapel a dormant node of diabolic penetration.
- Others hold that the Templars’ sacrifice “purified everything”, and the anomalies are inactive echoes.
Open questions
- Whether the immolation was fully carried out, and whether one paladin or several died.
- Whether the chapel is a closed monument or an active node in pause.
- Where Pablo’s emergency jump took him.
