The Chamber of the Whispering Masks is a dark chamber beneath the Malachite Fortress in Caldero, its walls covered in carved masks that whisper warnings and prayers. It watches and warns rather than attacks.

Description

The chamber is reached by falling down the slide trap at the back of the surface locksmith’s area; the slide’s mouth opens high in the wall. Dozens of masks, all different, cover the walls from top to bottom and seem to look straight at whoever enters. Some have half-open mouths from which threads of vapor drift down to the empty center of the floor. The faces are not fully human: some are bestial, some abstract and geometric, some hold expressions a human face cannot easily sustain. A constant whisper of warnings and prayers fills the room, the masks acting as a single body with unsynchronized voices. Those inside feel the steady pressure of the intermediate negative pole.

History

During La Jabalina’s first mission, Ayrton, Sila and Tony Malatesta rested here after hours of exploration and fighting, avoiding further traps and treasure. Sila heard a metallic creak from the corridor. Ayrton rose with his dagger while Tony readied himself. It was not a trap but a secret door the three had failed to find, opening to admit Lukas and the rest of the main group with the rescued children.

Ayrton stayed practical and Tony attended to the Eiffel Tower clock he carried, but Sila was visibly shaken: «Están… advirtiéndonos de algo» (“They are… warning us of something”). His bond with the Shadowfell lets him hear the whispers as a message. The group did not stay long enough to learn it.

Open questions

  • The masks’ origin is not preserved. Proposed: dwarven decoration from when Zenith Splintershield commanded the fortress; a working of the intermediate negative pole that watches intruders; remains of a clandestine theosophist cult older than Kazmojen’s network; or the place’s own cosmology, tied to the primordial Platform beneath Caldero.
  • What the masks warn of is unknown. Proposed: the Cageewrights and the prophecy of the marks; a reactivation of the Dark Chapel, whose rift the rite of Sacred Reconnection sealed; the danger the negative pole breeds in the high towers; or something not yet articulated.
