History

Arcoms came from Arborea, not from the Mediterranean. He belongs to the Duward, a spiritual caste of Brightwater, the inner sea of Sea Hill, where the careful handling of the Word is taught.

Before Mithranor he was another man: an agent of the Doomguard, a sorcerer of dark principles and some renown. Love for his daughter changed him almost entirely; traces of the old shadow remain. A Githyanki attack on his tower is tied to the loss of his daughter.

He then became Master Librarian of Mithranor, the library-council the Forgotten Realms preserve, a carefully kept version of the lesser Myth Drannor.

In old age his workshop trained:

Elías the Magister descends from the workshop’s line at a distance, not as a confirmed direct disciple.

The phylactery

When Clarisa was wounded beyond what minor magic could heal, Arcoms gave her his phylactery, which had sustained him as a benign lich, custodian of the most important artifacts of the Cosmos. The father became mortal. Clarisa later broke her own artificial heart, and the demon Kaxathros did the rest.

The Rift

He descended the first Rift with Amitlai and Arian, and ended up confronting them, not through betrayal but through excessive affinity with his former shadow. Arian redeemed him and brought him back; he was reintegrated with precautions. He is associated with the Pantheon without being a full member.

Islaire

He spent his late years in Islaire with Amitlai (as Sarai), Frome, Bazim-Gorag and Latromis. What happened there afterward is kept out of the record by the pact of the retired.

Distinct namesakes

  • Arkos: the young clone of the Plata, sorcerer of Pope Alexander VI, a scribe given to Argentinisms. A clone of Arcoms Cosmar, not of Marcos the Mage.
  • Arcoms Cosmar: the Duward of Brightwater, librarian of Mithranor, father of Clarisa.
  • Marcos the Mage: the necromancer lich of Alexandria, husband of Neferu, thief of the Blue Book. A different figure; the shared anagram is not an identity.

Conflicting accounts

  • Paulus holds that Mithranor is the operative equivalent of Al-Mital, the imaginal world (‘ālam al-mithāl), the plane between the sensible and the intelligible where images exist without bodies; if so, Arcoms guarded the source from which Akala gathers her plates. The doctrinaires of the Decadian do not accept this; the heretical Sortians consider it obvious.

Open questions

  • Whether the shared anagram of Arkos, Arcoms and Marcos points to an older kinship.
