Description
He is known as Lucky in Caldero, in La Jabalina and in the popular press; whoever asks his real name gets no answer. Mascor Blancarba wrote in the Caldero Gazette: he “combines the nobility of a paladin with the subtlety of arcane magic”, and his smites charged with divine power are feared by all who rise against the good.
Lineage
Rumor holds that he comes from “an ancient lineage of knights related to Arian”; few risk asking him more. The archive’s senior chronicler records the suspicion that Lucky is an avatar of the Arian Line in Vala Cristalis. The line as listed:
- Arian, primordial elf deified in the Pantheon
- Auro, hero of the Renaissance
- The harlequin avatar, paladin-harlequin of the Pit
- Caladan, vampirized wonderwalker, involuntary darklord of Valakhan
- Lucky
A sixth, anticipated avatar may operate in a fold the archive has not consolidated. Lucky appears to be partly and discreetly aware of his lineage.
Combat
One press account: in a festive hall overrun by rats and bats, Lucky led the charge against a bugbear vampire, while La Jabalina sought to stop the night creatures before the Goblin Queen escaped. He takes the front against creatures of the negative pole (vampires, undead, beings of the Shadowfell, infernal manifestations), on which his smites do disproportionate harm. The people of Caldero see him as a major figure of the light pole, and his public appearances raise morale.
The Bastard Cromas
Lucky shares the main room of the Bastard Cromas with Teo, the armless paladin; their meeting in the mist was foundational for the group. Gossip & Style asked whether the two were plotting to become Caldero’s strongest pair, and noted that the sacred order frowns on such spending. Some hierophants of the Temple of St. Cuthbert have privately called the cost (six hundred gold pieces for three months) improper for paladins, whose orthodox doctrine stresses ritual poverty. Lucky and Teo accepted a financing contract with Captain Skellerang and moved into an eccentric mage’s house; the group justifies it as a needed base.
Conflicting accounts
On the source of his arcane magic, the archive lists three hypotheses:
- a dual doctrinal path allowed by the late Sacred Order for frontier work;
- a gift of his Arian lineage, paralleling Adam the Harlequin in the Pit;
- a secret pact with a minor entity of the primordial arcane pole.
Open questions
- His real name is not recorded.
- Whether he is bound to the Cageewrights prophecy, which binds Teo, is unconfirmed; Arkos proposes he is placed beside Teo to counterbalance it.
