Elías is a Master wizard of Antiterra, one of its most powerful, a practitioner of dual magic and the ancient enemy of Graz’zt. His name also carries the tradition of the prophet taken up in a chariot.

Description

He is “old Elías”, a mortal sorcerer and at once “a mega-powerful entity”. His face, clothing and voice are not described; he was once seen “on the verge of tears”. He has a tower of his own, an escort of 20 men, and the chariot “in which Elías was taken up by the Lord”.

Elías exists in two physically identical copies, “like your doppelganger”: “one is evil and the other is good”.

He is “the Master Elías, formerly Magister”, and heads the short list of dual-magic practitioners, alongside the companions of the gesta.

Powers

His art is domination: he can contest Graz’zt’s “dominion over other creatures”. Graz’zt “has been my enemy for thousands of years”, in clashes that lasted months. He conjures with shadows (“shadows are my kind of conjurations”), yet sees them as “our great enemy”. His power grows by study: after learning more about dual magic, his power to confront Graz’zt increased.

Wishes and deeds

  • He was the first to wish for dual magic.
  • He made a second, long-term wish: that the child Gracia was to bear be his and not Graz’zt’s, and he its eternal destroyer.
  • “Elías did this over these 300 years to save Morkai.”
  • He faced the eight Aliax in a tournament.
  • In an earlier gesta he is the “owner” of Casimiro.
  • In the present cycle he traveled with the company in a submarine; at least one member distrusted him.

The prophet

A tradition of Semitic origin rests on the same name: the chariot of the taking-up; the pairing with Enoch (“Elías and Enoch will descend and set aside their flesh and the world, and take a spiritual body”); the Legends of the Apocalypse of Elías; and his descent as an emissary from an eclipse 3,000 years ago, while “a horrid plague was raining”. This tradition calls him “our Inspiration”.

Foreseen future

In “a flash, a memory, a dream of an uncertain future” he receives the Scepter of the Gods, confronts Zeus and falls against him. That future can still be avoided.

Conflicting accounts

  • He is called “an important figure of Florence”, yet the same voices ask how he comes to be in Venice.

Open questions

  • Where his tower stands and what it is for.
  • Which time scales (300 years for Morkai, thousands of years against Graz’zt, 3,000 since the eclipse, some twenty since “the literal wish”) belong to the man and which to the prophetic figure; what that wish and its “shared consolation” were.
  • Which of the two Elíases traveled in the submarine, and how to tell them apart.
  • Whether Elías and Arian are the same person.
  • How the Master relates to the prophet Elías, beyond chariot, name and Inspiration; what Casimiro is.
