The Defeat of the Varumani is the fall of the troll people of the Varumani, who ruled the Troll Lifts and the Court of the Thegn in the Ardis Vala Mega-Dungeon. It deposed Varboka and marks the passage from the original run to the post-Hiatus period.

Cause
The defeat is confirmed after the fact (“Aunque ahora vencieron a los trolls…”). The Varumani, holders of the egg-bomb, were destroyed “por castigo ante tamaña violencia contra la humanidad” (“as punishment for such violence against humanity”):
- The Seekers gave them the egg-bomb.
- Kerbog Khan sent the dragonfly for it and detonated it over Ritornello, killing thousands.
- The Seekers carried out part of the punishment; wider cosmological forces were involved — possibly the Custodes Oculis Solis, positive-plane energy, or the emerging authority of Pope Alejandro Sixto.
What was lost
- Court of the Thegn: Varboka deposed, dead or exiled; the four clans (Rudigaya, Vanaraya, Pendaya, Druvaya) scattered; chiefs Hraskaya, Vedraya One-Eye, Gavra Easy-Going and Igrippa Unruly deposed; court sorcerer Ashoka’s fate unknown; record keeper Vimela’s archives possibly lost; the court and Troll Market dissolved or taken over; passports void; chokepoints neutralized; mine boss Prayaska’s silver mine ungoverned.
- Troll Lifts: overseer Gorlen and vice-overseer Trijax deposed; the lifts without operators; the bestial Varumani leaderless.
- Exiles: Gog, Peabo and Muq, exiled before the defeat, may have returned or risen as leaders; apprentice overseer Ecath’s fate is uncertain.
Possible consequences
- Kerbog Khan loses a trading ally.
- The Halflings of Plumthorn, Kaliyani, Tsilliv, the Heqeti of Caudatssa and Reepsiq of the Ziggurat of Kauket may expand (the Halflings, tolerated under Varumani neutrality, may also shrink).
- The vampire Cinna Minux’s hidden domain may become easier to find, or safer.
- The Knights of the Scar of the Sun under Valerius and the Pope may fill the vacuum.
- Whitemane’s inn loses Varumani endorsement.
Open questions
- How exactly the Varumani fell, and whether at the end of the original run or during the Hiatus.
- Whether a mishandled activation of the Beacon played a part.
