Description
A veteran true varumani whose wounds close by themselves and whose mind is impregnable. Cautious, loyal and disciplined; not cruel, but unforgiving of betrayal.
Rule
His people, the dungeon’s most powerful (about 100 true, 170 lesser and an unknown number of bestial varumani), are declining: births fall and the oldest die. Privately accepting this, Varboka:
- seeks to activate the Beacon, believed to bring regeneration, awakening or new varumani;
- hires capable adventurers;
- offers 100 gold pieces per fang of the Kaliyani, a renegade Heqeti sub-race and ancestral enemies, recently rediscovered.
He issues the passports that let visitors move in peace through the court and the Troll Market. He moves between throne, ritual baths and private chambers; public rites (Moot, Audience, Cleansing of Sorrows, Victor’s Right) fix his place. Lord Carcalus and Stephania (Set), slave traders, are clients.
Court: clan chiefs Hraskaya (Rudigaya, military), Vedraya One-Eye (Vanaraya, conservatives), Gavra the Easy-Going (Pendaya, diplomats) and Igrippa the Unruly (Druvaya, dissidents eyeing the thegnship); Ashoka the Court Sorcerer; Glif, First Adept; Vimela the Record Keeper; Trijax, vice-overseer of the Troll Lifts; and the housecarls.
Fall
In the Defeat of the Varumani the Seekers beat the trolls, presumably including Varboka. His court was abandoned or reoccupied and his staff scattered.
