Lord Carcalus, the Lord of the Arena, is the sole ruler of the Arena of the Ardis Vala Mega-Dungeon, one of the few surviving rudishva of no apparent age. He has lived for millennia in the box above it.

Description

He wears a permanent crusader-style mask after Baldwin, the leper king of Jerusalem, and ceremonial gothic armor, possibly modified rudishva work.

Role

The heqeti gladiatorial Arena has been in continuous use for about 4,000 years. Its supreme rule: no violence outside the Arena pit; breakers are eliminated without process, so the rest of the level is safe. His steward is Tredgeris the Dapifer. He pays well for fighting monsters and slaves and keeps a market for the newly rich. One recorded fight (3 ogres, 3 hellhounds, 3 manticores, a three-headed chimera) had a 20,000 gold piece pot; the Seekers took 18,000 after commission. Three keys and metal tokens figured in negotiations with them.

He buys slaves from Stephania and Gunnar (Guild of Service, Forum of Set) and monsters from the Beastmen of Deino, respects Varboka and Whitemane, and is neutral toward all others. Like Psalor Ki and RAJ-750, he survives from the old rudishva regime.

Open questions

After the Defeat of the Varumani, entry into Ravenloft and the rise of Pope Alejandro Sixto:

  • Did he survive the Hiatus? Ageless, he should have.
  • Does he still run the Arena, whose supply relied partly on the Varumani?
  • Did he become, as is strongly possible, master of games of the papal domain (Strahd and colosseum aesthetic), or was he eliminated as a pagan?
