Uni is a small one-eyed, snow-gray monkey with a prehensile tail that appeared on the shoulder of Aunt Barbarella in the Temple of the Ice; it is not magical, yet it turned Dandy’s anger back on its own arm, and fled downward.

Description

Its single round eye looks at each person for exactly the time it takes to take a measurement, with an attention no beast should have. Barbarella, coming off a bad night of terrors, petted it and called it Uni. It was checked twice: it is not magical. “That is what is most frightening.”

History

When Dandy tried to drive it off, his anger turned over in his arm like someone else’s glove, and the blow meant for the monkey sought the aunt instead. The creature leapt, spun in the air with obscene glee, dodged everything, and went exactly where no one wanted anything to go: down — toward the same below as the chain of the Blue Mourner, the howl and the stairs.

Open questions

  • What it is. Provisional classification: small creature, not magical, with influence over others’ anger and excellent judgment in real estate. One-eyed things that watch a great deal tend to be watching for someone.
