The Valley of Death is a lifeless desert of Uchronic Paris, 10–15 miles inland from eastern Anatolia (between Paphlagonia and Theodosiopolis, near the Caucasus), holding a pyramid and an underground labyrinth.

Description

Stony ground, dry grass, dead trees, no animal life, and a wind that “sighs like a curse”. Outside lie a graveyard of giant reptile bones, unmarked gravestones, broken monoliths and half-buried city ruins; then hills and a raised plain; at the center, a dust-filled crater with pools of marble-like liquid that turns beings into living stone, and a pyramid. Beneath it, reached by a dry river, is the “realm of the city that awakens”.

The night sky shows black or inverted stars, perhaps two moons; visitors see double; dust moves by its own will; shadows stretch; days scorch and nights freeze.

A camp of conjurers builds an “army of stone and souls” with the marble liquid (like that at the court of the Yellow Lady) and sends hordes of giants against her realm.

History

  • Fights the Flying Serpent; meets Mother Grima.
  • A non-Euclidean tower aligned with Aldebaran, with inverted gravity and behavior-altering spores; four contaminated mercenaries.
  • Meetings with Ronian and Hugo; execution of Eurodico; a fight with the osfiotauro, in which Philippe dies or is critically wounded.
  • Much of this proves to be a spore-induced Mindscape.
  • The pyramid and labyrinth are explored.
