Premise

Latin motto: Mundus alter et idem — a different world, yet the same, with reference to the History of the Earth. Declared inspiration: Vladimir Nabokov’s Ada or Ardor, crossed with older elements of the shared cosmos.

The world in 1888

  • Electricity is known but forbidden (Tesla). Magic exists on the level of magnetism and mesmerism. “Nebolas” are alchemical explosives equivalent to a fireball.
  • Gunpowder exists, but revolvers only on the frontier and among security forces. Duels with swords and sabers; cuirasses for dragoons and parades.
  • A golden/prismatic curtain in the north (the aurora borealis) separates the “civilized” world from Chinese, Tartars, Mongols and demons. European Russia and known Asia lie outside Western control.
  • Canada is a melting pot of refugee peoples (c. 1400, Russian retreat via Bering, Franco-Anglophone defenses in Scotland).
  • Sword nobilities with elemental and prismatic powers, exhausted and turned into forgotten duchies.
  • North America: Monroe Doctrine under President Gamaliel; the Stars and Stripes reach Tierra del Fuego.
  • France: post-Napoleonic viceroyalty under Lord Gaul, under indirect British command. Stale aristocracies and high bourgeoisies.
  • “Apaches” both in Paris (lowlifes) and in America (allied with dragons).
  • Cities are industrial pustules that do not shun alchemy.
  • Diamond Lake: an oil and mining town of high reach in the Great Lakes area, near Chicago; starting point of the precursor band the Boreals.
  • The companions probably begin in Boston or Pennsylvania, communities where people dance the polka and drink milk: pilgrims, outsiders, thieves, amateur chemists, wanted duelists.

Role

Antiterra is the frame world of several gestas: the Boreals (Diamond Lake), the Deep Ones, the Regulators, and the Australia gesta. It is not to be confused with Earth (the assertoric world) or with inner diegetic planes such as Atlantis or the Abyss.
