The Hierarch (el Jerarca) is not a concept but a group: the hidden circle of the dangerous people of the 18th century, standing behind the Host Poker and above those who sit at it, observing and judging.

Orbit
- The Marquis de Sade, libertine of the “family of the devil,” is of their lineage.
- The diabolical authorities of Notre-Dame operate in their orbit: Lord Gaul, Viceroy of Paris and responsible for the poker contracts, and La Fiebre. They send the invitations by aerial servant’s mail and collect the pacts.
Role
- While Les Libertateurs play in the crypt near the Bastille, the Hierarch watches and counts them: “You are already marked.” The failed execution at Place Royale was a deliberate spectacle staged for observation.
- For them the poker is a moral test (they measure the group’s decisions) and a machine: the hosts won make Guardians, who activate the zodiacal platforms of the Game of Shadows.
- Host Poker, Paris, from 1715 A.D.A.: observation and marking of the group.
The champion
A black knight who leaves the cathedral and nearly kills La Plume. Beneath the armor is a double body (“female waist and male hand”). He is the circle made flesh and sword, not a third faction.
