Description
Known as the fastest hand in Caldero, he carries a dagger at his belt and a second in his sleeve, and can read a room in seconds. Mascor Blancarba describes a “famished face, merciless gaze” and, in the Caldero Gazette, calls him witty and charismatic, able to dazzle with a smile before vanishing into the shadows with loot, or to plant daggers in enemies’ armpits.
He prefers stealth, theft and infiltration; when that fails he uses quick, lethal daggers and no heavier weapons. His charm opens doors: he catalogs what each speaker might give without knowing it. He shares little personal history and rarely joins the warmth of the tavern, but acts whenever the group needs decisive action, clandestine information or a quiet execution.
History
The Bazaar of Life
In the group’s first mission, the Bazaar of Life, the Company of Laughter was beating Rulfo, keeper of the orphanage, in an alley. After the group’s mage cast a sleep spell, Ayrton came up behind the last ruffian standing and whispered “home”; the terrified man fled, and the adventurers helped Rulfo. Ayrton stood back and watched.
In the locksmith’s workshop he noticed that the locks of the children’s rooms had not been forced, which showed that the gnome Keygan Ghelve was directly involved in the kidnappings and let the group confirm his guilt before he fled. Ghelve tried to blind them with a spell; Ayrton reached him, wounded him with a blow under the armpits and cut his throat. Jaromir, a child who witnessed the execution, fled in terror; Ayrton did not react. He then infiltrated the tunnels to free the captured children.
Later missions
He took part in the group’s second and third missions, the Path of Drakthar and Flood Season. Companions include the mage Tony Malatesta and the newly joined Vitalis; he has operated in the Malachite Fortress.
The souvenir shop
After the move to the Bastard Cromas he opened a shop selling “souvenirs” and magical curiosities recovered on the group’s operations. Witnesses speak of visitors who enter with a pouch of coins and leave with more than a souvenir. The shop serves as a contact point for buyers of magic items outside official guilds, an outlet for recovered relics and a listening post on Caldero’s rumors. Gossip & Style asked: “Shady business or honest trade?” Ayrton does not answer the press.
The Obsidian Tower
According to the press, he nearly infiltrated the Obsidian Tower, lair of Lord Valanthru, but a sorcerous drone discovered him in time. He does not discuss the aim, and the group does not ask.
Open questions
- What he sought in the Obsidian Tower is unknown. Suggested aims: news of the chosen child Valanthru adopted, relics tied to the Cageewrights prophecy, or documents on a suspected noble conspiracy.
- The press also asked why the lights foretold his fall.
