Skulk is a creature of the Shadowfell that stays invisible and kills in brief, concentrated attacks. Its name comes from the English verb to skulk: it hunts by patience and opportunity, not brute force.

Behavior

  • Continuous invisibility while the intermediate Shadowfell pole sustains it.
  • Leaps from high shadows (upper floors, ledges, dark corners).
  • Fast, lethal movement toward a single target.
  • When struck, a piercing shriek before collapsing.
  • After defeat, the body slowly fades, as if the Shadowfell reclaimed it. It leaves no permanent corpse, no relics, and no way to confirm its defeat afterward.

History

Skulks served as agents of clandestine incursion during Drakthar’s period of operation, sharing his doctrine.

On La Jabalina’s first mission, during the subgroup’s descent to the Malachite Fortress, a Skulk leapt from the shadows of the locksmith’s shop’s upper floor at Sila. The monk deflected a deadly blow. Ayrton lunged from below and sank his dagger into the creature’s lower belly; it shrieked and collapsed. Tony, running down at the noise, watched the body fade. “We are not alone here,” he said, looking at his clock. “This place is guarded by more than mechanical traps.”

Further encounters may have occurred on the mission of the Path of Drakthar. As of 1824 AE, Skulks remain active in Shadowfell substructures beneath Caldero.

Relationship with Sila

Sila has a tie to the Shadowfell, the Skulks’ plane of origin. The attack on him is read as the Shadowfell trying to reclaim him: whenever he acts against the negative pole, it acts against him.
