Description
Known as “Ghelve” or “the gnome locksmith”, he walked on stilts to reach the height of his human customers. His workshop stood on a street of Caldero’s middle rings. Publicly a competent locksmith with a wide clientele, he also had clandestine access to the underground of Jzadirune through the keys on his vest.
History
La Jabalina reached his workshop following clues from the boy Jaromir. Ghelve received them nervously. The mage’s rat (possibly the familiar of Tony) had already found a trail of cheese crumbs leading to a red curtain at the back, but the clue was set aside as tension grew. Ayrton noticed that the locks of the orphans’ rooms had not been forced: Ghelve opened the doors with his own keys.
Ghelve cast Color Spray to blind the adventurers and fled. Ayrton caught him, struck him below the armpits, leaving him badly wounded on the workshop steps, and then cut his throat.
Jaromir witnessed the execution and fled; Lukas and Foggimer ran after him, and his flight triggered the octagonal pit trap that dropped part of the band into the Malachite Fortress. Meanwhile Ayrton, the mage and a third shadowy figure looted the workshop. The rat followed the crumbs and found, behind the red curtains, a secret door with a sign reading “THE LOCK IS THE KEY”.
The workshop’s contents
- A vest with dozens of keys of various sizes, taken by Tony Malatesta to open the gear doors of Jzadirune.
- An old wall clock with an intricate Eiffel Tower as its hand, gears glinting with residual magic and marks on the frame not fully deciphered: the Eiffel Tower Clock, also taken by Tony.
- Three chests with diagrams, half-built locks and an ornate crossbow.
- Dozens of cheese crumbs, used as bait for the band’s familiar rat.
