The Rod of Infinity (Vara del Infinito, also called the Rod of Limiurgo) is the artifact with which the universe was created. The act of creation broke it into three pieces.

Description

The Rod is unique and has no price. It comes apart and reassembles, as it did to attack Asmodeus, and strikes like a walking staff. In the scene where Alatea appears, a rod “ending in a blue stone” is recorded; the name was fixed from that stone.

The Rod is recorded only in someone’s hand, never in a place. Arian used it to give each companion an artifact (“Yes, take one artifact each”), though one passage says the act was the Rod’s, not Arian’s. Sune struck the serpent of Serpent Island in the face with it.

Uses

  • Creating: the universe was made with it.
  • Destroying: a stated purpose was “to destroy that world” with it.
  • Striking: even cosmological entities.
  • Reuniting: Ariel reunified the fragments of the crystal with it.

Axis and course

The records name “the axis of the Rod of Infinity”, which connects planes. A stated rule holds that the Rod’s course “is a good moment to make changes even at the level of the rules”. Whether the Rod causes that moment or only marks it is disputed.

Wielding

The Rod needs “a suitable bearer”. One holder set a condition: if given the stone, that holder could “halt the advance” with the Rod.

Open questions

  • Whether Alatea’s blue-stone rod is the Rod itself or only the rod that fixed its name.
  • Who or what Limiurgo is (the maker or a place).
  • Who holds the three pieces, and whether each use needs all three.
  • Whether the pieces match three planes, and whether the axis needs the Rod whole.
  • What makes a bearer “suitable”, what “the advance” is, and what the “course” is.
