Role

Rulfo, the guardian, handles security and premises; Gretchyn handles food, clothing, care of the little ones and records, with careful discipline and long institutional memory. When Rulfo fell victim to the attack of the Company of Laughter, she kept the orphanage going alone until he returned.

History

When La Jabalina (“the Javelin”) arrived carrying the wounded Rulfo, Gretchyn at first distrusted them. Seeing his state and recognizing them as envoys of the Temple (the summons of Jenya Urikas had reached her through the church), she let them in but stayed wary, asking precise questions and keeping them from the children unsupervised. The children were clearly frightened; among them was a boy, Jaromir, who seemed to be key. She allowed careful questioning and reluctantly agreed to let the group take Jaromir.

After the rescue of four orphans from the Bazaar of Life, the group rose to the surface by elevator at dawn, and Gretchyn received them with tears in her eyes. She did not embrace them, but offered them café con leche at the orphanage. Mascor Blancarba records the episode in the Caldero Gazette.

Present

Gretchyn remains active in the orphanage in the present cycle, coordinating with the recovered Rulfo, with the NGO of Teo, and with spiritual support from Foggimer. The orphanage takes in the four rescued orphans and other children displaced by the disrupted trafficking networks.
