History
In Kreider’s hardhold she makes armas tumberas (improvised jailhouse weapons) with the scrapper Gusano, traffics medicine and gunpowder; the guard twins never forgave her a failed prosthesis. She carries a buried sexual trauma and a bond with spirits.
The Head Hunter, who beheads victims at the moment of ecstasy, offered her divine orgasm and miraculous motherhood. Wearing a VR helmet, Zaa refused; for the first time the Hunter failed, only cutting her throat. Ángel García, the doctor who loved her, healed her and later died shot in the head shielding others. On a fleeing plane, a gun Zaa thought unloaded killed Capecita in a struggle.
On the train, in shock, she prayed to San La Muerte and received a black mantle that became armor; that night she first embraced Shibuya. She took a spider ally and embraced killing. Captured in the House of Horror, she disemboweled her executioner.
In her leap of faith she threw herself into the void; her nanobots projected her consciousness and her African ancestors’ to an out-of-phase world of panthers that awaits her as prophet and desert queen. Larkin rescued her wounded body.
