Monkchester is an agricultural town south of York. A coordinated Pictish-Celtic-Viking invasion razed it. It was rebuilt under the dual leadership of Dolores and Egas, on the basis of a Christian vision and spiritual healing.
It was the scene of lynchings (Lagu), reprisals and a communal resurgence. Its destruction is a central turning point of the story.
