David is the mayor of York, a weak but contemplative warrior and ruler, husband of Dolores (bearer of Excalibur) and leader of the Company of David, with Dolores, Shen, Egas, Demian and More.
He shows deep contemplation (“he would close his eyes”) yet enjoys More’s violent, psychopathic side. Dolores judged that his leadership would fail in rebuilding Monkchester. He was saved from a spell of Lubina by celestial light, and arrived an hour after Monkchester’s destruction.
In Lords of York he is also “sorcerer of York”, friend of the Archbishop and a born manipulator, who escaped a peasant mob through More’s intimidation and brother Demian’s intervention. Under Lubina’s spell he proved “the worst of the three” in corruptibility. In an act of demonic madness he threw Lagu over a precipice on the road to Cumbria, then teleported away with Dolores and More, who had been turned into a bird. Before the Archbishop he feigned repentance.
